Cape Agulhas is known as the place where two oceans meet. This is where the Indian and Atlantic Oceans converge. This rocky headland provides you with the perfect photo opportunity at the stone plaque that marks the spot of the southernmost tip of Africa.

But this is not the only reason why you should visit Cape Agulhas.

Even though there is so much to do in Cape Town, there are also many great day trip opportunities from Cape Town, whether you want to explore the Cape Peninsula, visit Cape Town’s Winelands, take a day trip to Paarl or explore the rocky coast of Cape Agulhas – the opportunities are endless!

Cape Agulhas is the perfect day trip from Cape Town and is definitely worth a visit!

We’ve decided to take the scenic route to our destination which did add an extra few minutes; however, the view along the way makes up for it.

Taking the scenic route will take about 3 hours if you drive straight through.

Here is the perfect itinerary for your day trip:

clarence-drive

Stop 1: Clarence Drive

Clarence Drive is often hailed as one of the most scenic coastal routes in the world. It winds its way along the dramatic coastline of Cape Town. Stretching from Gordon’s Bay to Rooi Els, the iconic road offers breathtaking vistas of the turquoise waters of False Bay set aside by towering cliffs and rugged mountains. As you traverse its winding curves, you’ll be treated to panoramic views of pristine beaches, secluded coves, and vibrant fynbos-covered hillsides.

Look out for the cute coffee vendors at the viewpoints.

After this, we made our way to Bot River and continued our journey on the N2.

Stop 2: Zuidste Kaap Pub & Restaurant

We grabbed lunch at the most southern restaurant in Africa – the Zuidste Kaap Pub & Restaurant. Their portions are massive and the food was really delicious. You can walk down the road to the little gift shop to buy some souvenirs.

Stop 3: Cape Agulhas Lighthouse

The Cape Agulhas Lighthouse is perched proudly atop the rugged cliffs of Cape Agulhas. It stands tall as a beacon of maritime history and coastal heritage. Dating back to 1848, this is the third lighthouse to be built in South Africa and it is the second oldest one that is still operating. This iconic structure has guided countless ships safely through the treacherous waters.

It forms part of the Agulhas National Park and rises 27 meters above sea level. The white tower commands panoramic views of the surrounding coastline.

The fun thing about the Lighthouse is that you can go explore the top of the Lighthouse. There is a small entrance fee you need to pay (R30pp – 2021) before daring the very steep ladders to the top. There are three levels to the top and the view here is absolutely stunning. You can also see the wooden walkway leading to the most southern viewpoint.

Stop 4: Southernmost point in Africa

The southernmost point in Africa is a geographical landmark of unparalleled significance.

Once you’re done exploring the lighthouse, make your way down to the rugged coastline. The rugged coastline, battered by relentless waves, offers a stark contrast to the tranquil hinterland beyond.

With the iconic marker and breathtaking vistas stretching to the horizon, this point is a testament to the raw beauty and untamed spirit of the continent.

Also, have a look at the massive African map showcasing all the different mountain ranges.

Stop 5: Meisho Maru Shipwreck

The Meisho Maru shipwreck stands as a haunting reminder of the seafarers navigating the treacherous waters. Stranded on the rugged coastline, the decaying remains of this Japanese fishing trawler are surrounded by crashing waves. This fishing vessel met its end in 1982 but luckily the 17 members of the Meisho Maru were able to swim to the shore, leaving the ship behind to fend against the wind and waves for the years to follow.

Follow the gravel road to the shipwreck which is easily done with a non-4×4 vehicle.

Tip: October would be the best time to visit the Agulhas National Park, as this is wildflower season in the Western Cape, meaning the fields are lid up with colourful flowers dancing in the wind.

Stop 6: Hermanus

Before making your way back to Cape Town, stop at the charming coastal town – Hermanus. It is nestled along the shores of Walker Bay and is renowned for its natural beauty and whale-watching opportunities.

Grab a bite to eat at Ficks restaurant where you will have a great view of the sun setting over the ocean.
