If you’re planning a trip to Hermanus, you’re in for a treat! Known as one of the best whale-watching destinations in the world, this coastal town in South Africa is bursting with natural beauty, adventure, and plenty of spots to relax and take in the view. Plus, it’s a fantastic place to overnight if you’re travelling from Cape Town to the Garden Route. Or if you are just planning a day trip from Cape Town, as it is only a 90-minute drive.

Things to do in Hermanus
Whether you’re a nature lover, a foodie, or just looking for a laid-back escape, there’s something for everyone.
So here are my favourite things to do in Hermanus:
Dine at Ficks Pool Restaurant
This is probably one of the most popular spots in Hermanus, and once you see the view and taste the food, you’ll understand why.
Imagine sipping a cocktail while waves crash against the rocks below you. Ficks Pool Restaurant is perched right on the water, serving up delicious bites and unbeatable views. It’s the ideal place to unwind after a day of exploring.
They typically serve pinchos, which is a dish that originated in Northern Spain. These are small-sized dishes served on a skewer.
Opening Hours: every day from 11 am to 9 pm.
Location: 8 Marine Drive
Instagram: @ ficksrestaurant
Walk the Hermanus Cliff Path
This scenic 12 km path stretches along the coast, offering panoramic views of the ocean and prime whale-watching spots (more on that later!). It’s an easy walk, so take your time, breathe in the salty air, and enjoy the beauty of the rugged coastline.
This walk starts near the (📍) new harbour and runs all the way to Grotto Beach. The entire path is within the Fernkloof Nature Reserve, which is a protected area. It is also good to know that over 9 km of this path is accessible to wheelchairs.
Go Whale Watching
Whales are, without a doubt, some of the most majestic creatures in the ocean. Hermanus is the place for whale watching, especially from early June to November, and many people travel to Hermanus just for this. Every year in late September or early October, Hermanus hosts its annual Whale Festival, when large numbers of Southern Right Whales frolic in the ocean.
Even though you can spot these creatures from the shore, the best way to witness them is with a boat ride.
Discover Local Art and Sculptures
Art lovers can rejoice in Hermanus because it is home to a vibrant art scene. It’s a lovely way to add a little culture to your visit.
You can enjoy the Hermanus First Friday Art Walk, which is part of a worldwide initiative to make art galleries more accessible to the public. So, if you’re in Hermanus on the first Friday of every month, make sure you don’t miss this. There are more than 20 galleries to visit, and it is an easy walk through Hermanus Old Town.
If you don’t have time to visit a gallery, you will see murals and sculptures scattered all around town.
Visit the Hermanus Whale Museum
Want to learn about the gentle giants of the sea? The Whale Museum is a must-visit. It’s small but packed with fascinating exhibits about the whales that visit the bay.
Operating Hours:
- Monday to Saturday from 9 am to 4:30 pm
- Sunday from 11 am to 3 pm
Location: 3 Market Square Street
Stroll through the Old Harbour Market
Established in 2009, this market is perfect for picking up some local crafts and unique souvenirs. It’s a great way to support local artisans and take a piece of Hermanus home with you.
Operating hours: every day from 9 am to 5 pm
Instagram: @oldharbourmarket
Location: Market Square Street
Shop at the Hermanus Waterfront
For more retail therapy, head to the Hermanus Waterfront. It’s a mix of boutiques, galleries, and restaurants.
Operating hours:
- Monday to Saturday from 9 am to 5 pm.
- Sunday from 9 am to 3 pm.
Location: 104 Main Road

Snap a photo at the Yellow Frame
These iconic yellow frames are dotted all over South Africa, and Hermanus has one right in front of the waterfront. It’s the perfect spot for a keepsake photo.
Eat your way down Marine Drive
Marine Drive is lined with restaurants offering everything from fresh seafood to gourmet burgers. Grab a table with a view and savour the flavours of the coast.
One favourite for us is the Belgian Waffles for breakfast at The Belgian. Other popular ones include Bientang’s Cave Restaurant, Pear Tree Bistro and the Rock Restaurant
Take a dip in the Hermanus Tidal Pool
Need to cool off? The tidal pool is a natural swimming spot where you can float around while waves crash over the rocks. It is located below the Marine Hotel, next to Bientang’s Cave Restaurant. Just make sure you take dive shoes, as there are sea urchins and sharp rocks in the tidal pool. It is also a great spot for snorkelling at low tide.
It’s a refreshing way to connect with the ocean.
Explore Harold Porter National Park
Okay, this gem is technically a 45-minute drive from Hermanus and located in Betties Bay, but trust me—it’s worth the drive! Harold Porter National Park is a botanical wonderland with stunning hiking trails, waterfalls, and lush landscapes.
Operating hours:
- Monday to Friday from 8 am to 4:30 pm
- Weekends and Public Holidays from 8 am to 5 pm
Location: Cnr Clarence Drive and Broadwith Road
There are three popular trails in the area:
Fynbos Trail and Zigzag Trail
These two trails comprise one long and one short trail where you get a great view of the natural fynbos around you and the ocean. These trails start at the Round Bridge and then make their way along the southern slopes of Bobbejaanskop and The Plateau. You will be spoiled with spectacular views of Betty’s Bay and the ocean.
Leopards Kloof Trail
You will need to get a permit at the entrance of the garden. During this hike, you’ll travel through the forest and cross the stream several times before ending at a beautiful waterfall.
This trail is closed during heavy rain, and you cannot start the hike after 1 pm. You also have to return the keys by 4 pm.
There are still leopards in the area that are seen at night, and that is why the trail got its name.
There are a total of three waterfalls on this hike, and from December to the end of January, you will see the red disa flower. Please take note that you are not allowed to swim in these pools.
Disa Kloof Trail
Probably the most popular trail at this national park. The trail got its name from the red Disa orchids that flower on the cliff faces.
This is a very short trail that will take around 30 minutes each way to complete. You walk over the Olive May Porter Bridge and into a wooded area where you’ll be surrounded by birds singing.
What is nice about this trail is that it is accessible for wheelchair users and for parents with prams.
Enjoy a boat ride
If you’re craving more time on the water, hop on a boat tour. Whether it’s a whale-watching cruise or a leisurely sunset sail, being out at sea adds an extra layer of magic to your trip.
Hike at Fernkloof Nature Reserve
For even more hiking, head to Fernkloof Nature Reserve. The trails wind through fynbos-covered hills with stunning views over the town and coastline.
Once you get to the parking area, make your way to the visitor’s centre to sign in. Here you can purchase a map and choose from the many available trails.
Here are four of the most popular trails:
Blue Route
This is an easy 2 km route that will take around 1 hour to complete. It will take you along the lower slopes of the reserve. This is also a dog-friendly trail, so make sure your furry friends also get their exercise in.
Green Route
The green route is a loop around Lemoenkop, and it will take you around 1 hour to 1 hour and 30 minutes to complete this 3.5 km trail.
Read Route
This trail is a 3.5 km trail that will also take about 1 hour to 1 hour and 30 minutes to complete. Here, you’ll be spoiled with a waterfall whilst exploring the upper slopes of the reserve.
Orange Route
This route is perfect for the experienced hiker. This route is 13.5 km long with an elevation of 625 m. It will take around 4 to 5 hours to complete, as it takes you around the Platberg Mountain.
Visit the Klipgat Cave at Walker Bay Nature Reserve
Last but not least, make sure to visit Klipgat Cave. It’s a site of archaeological significance with epic ocean views. Be sure to book your tickets online in advance to secure your spot.
BOOK TICKETS HERE
You access the Klipgat Caves from the De Kelders gate at Walker Bay Nature Reserve.
The caves are accessible via a boardwalk and a small amount of rock-hopping; the Klipgat Cave has two chambers. To the left is a small entryway that leads into the main site of the cave, where you’ll see a circular boardwalk.
Great Coffee Shops in Hermanus
If you know me by now, you’ll know that I love a good coffee spot. Hermanus has an amazing coffee culture with plenty of cozy cafes to choose from.
Here are some of my favourite coffee shops to visit:
Where to stay?
Hermanus offers a variety of places to stay, from cozy guesthouses to luxurious oceanfront hotels. Whether you prefer waking up to the sound of waves crashing or staying closer to the town’s heart, you’ll find something that suits your style.

Hermanus is one of those places that stays with you long after you leave. Whether you’re chasing adventure or just want to soak in the serene coastal vibes, this town delivers.
