Hiking Trails at the Garden Route National Park

As the morning sun casts its golden glow upon the rugged coastline, the allure of Tsitsikamma unfolds. Trails intertwine through indigenous forests, where centuries-old trees stand tall. The scent of fynbos fills the air, and the symphony of birdcalls creates a harmonious backdrop for exploration.

Day Hikes

For those seeking some day adventures, some shorter trails await. My two favourites are the Mouth Trail and the Waterfall Trail. You can easily do both these trails in one day. My suggestion would be to start with the Mouth Trail and then do the Waterfall Trail.

Mouth Trail

Level: Easy

Total distance: 1 km

The Mouth Trail invites hikers to witness the meeting of the Storms River and the ocean. It is one of the most popular trails in the National Park, and it wiggles its way through the forest along the wooden walkway to the Storms River Suspension Bridge (📍)

When you enter the National Park you continue straight with the road until you reach the parking area at Sandy Bay next to the restaurant. The restaurant is also a great spot to enjoy some lunch.

After you’ve passed the restaurant, you continue on the pathway to the suspension bridge. Once you’ve passed the suspension bridge, you will be welcomed with gorgeous rocky scenery. As this beach consists of large pebbles, the waves cause the pebbles to sound like thunder when the waves crash onto the shore.

You can even continue with this trail after the bridge which will lead up to a lookout point on the plateau.

Waterfall Trail

Level: Medium

Total distance: 3 km

The waterfall trail (📍) forms part of the first 3 km of the world-renowned Otter Trail. The scenery this hike provides is out of this world and therefore makes this hike so worth it.

To get to the parking area you continue to the Oceanettes area. Just make sure that you follow the directions boards as to where you should park, as you are not allowed to enter the camping grounds. Parking is just before the booms leading to the campsite. You do however need to walk through the campsite to get to the start of the waterfall trail.

Along your way to the Tsitsikamma waterfall, you will walk past the Guano cave. This is the perfect spot to take a quick breath before you continue on your way to the waterfall.  When you start to hear the gushing of water, you’ll know you are almost there.  Remember to take your bathing costume with you to cool off before you continue with your journey back.

Multi-day Hike

One of the most famous multi-day hikes tends to be at the Garden Route National Park.

Otter Trail

One of the crown jewels of Tsitsikamma is the iconic Otter Trail, a 5-day trek that winds along the coastline. Over 40 kilometres of rugged terrain, this trail unveils a panorama of landscapes – rocky shores, secluded beaches, and cascading waterfalls. Each step resonates with the spirit of adventure, offering glimpses of dolphins dancing in the waves and the mesmerizing beauty of the Indian Ocean.

For the Otter Trail, securing permits in advance is crucial. Accommodation options range from campsites to comfortable chalets within the park.

Here is a summary of the distances and durations for the 5 days:

  1.  4.8 km (2 hours)
  2. 7.9 km (4 hours)
  3. 7.7 km (4 hours)
  4. 13.8 km (6 hours)
  5. 10.8 km (5 hours)

The weather in the Tsitsikamma can be unpredictable, so pack clothing suitable for various conditions. Sturdy shoes, water, and snacks are essentials.

Remember: Tsitsikamma in the Garden Route National Park isn’t just about hiking; it’s an embrace of the untamed spirit of nature. As the sun sets beyond the horizon, the memories of trails conquered and vistas admired linger on.

Whether tracing the Otter Trail’s footsteps or wandering along the park’s shorter trails, each moment is a testament to the unparalleled beauty and resilience of this coastal gem. Embrace the call of the wild and uncover the soul-stirring magic of Tsitsikamma – one step at a time.
