Visit the Glentana Shipwreck

Nestled along the rugged coastline of the Garden Route lies the Glentana Shipwreck. This hauntingly beautiful and eerie site attracts adventurers, history buffs, and photographers alike, offering a glimpse into the past.

The ship went aground back in 1902 due to strong wind. It was on its way to Cape Town from Durban. The ship is 123m long and there are three large pieces of the wreck still visible today.

The trail

Once you’ve parked your car, continue to your left and make your way towards the shipwreck.

Take note that you can only do this hike during low tide!

So make sure you check out the tide table before heading down there. You can check it out here.

Although most of the trail is along the beach, some areas require some rock climbing – even during low tide.

The first rock-climbing part is probably the worst, but it is doable even by kids.

I have to say, even during low tide, the ocean was pretty rough and close to the rocks. So definitely don’t try to attempt this hike during high tide.

This was also the first time I saw so many blue bottles along the beach as they were scattered all over.

The beach was stunning and seemed never-ending – in a good way. On your left, you’ll see the massive cliffs covered with forest, and on your right the vast ocean.

We were very lucky to have seen whales breaching not very far away from the beach.

There is a second part where you’ll climb over rocks and down to the beach and from here on it is a straight stretch to the shipwreck.

After you’ve explored the shipwreck, make your way to the Visgraat restaurant for a milkshake or cocktail. It has a nice view of the ocean.
