From beachside cafes to hidden gems, here’s where to find the best brews along the Garden Route:

Elvis Brew Co

For a retro vibe with a modern twist, head over to Elvis Brew Co which is owned by the former 2010 Idols winner, Elvis Blue.

They have opened several coffee shops (or Padstal), but the first one is located right opposite the airport in George. Here they have perfected the art of roasting, offering rich, full-bodied flavours. So grab a seat and enjoy the laid-back atmosphere while watching the planes soar to the sky.

You can also buy yourself some coffee beans which are roasted at the Padstal. There are also other merchandise you can look out for.

So make sure you keep an eye out for the bright yellow building when you’re in George again.

Brothers Coffee Roastery

Tucked away near Groot Brakrivier, Brothers Coffee Roastery feels like one of those hidden gems you almost don’t want to share. Surrounded by peaceful countryside views, this little coffee spot is perfect if you want to escape the busier towns for a while.

The atmosphere here is relaxed and welcoming, and you can really tell that they are passionate about their coffee. Their beans are roasted on-site, and they have actually won multiple awards for their coffee over the years, which makes it easy to understand why so many people love this place.

One thing I especially loved was how relaxed the whole experience felt. We spent some time playing dominoes at our table while enjoying our coffee, which made us slow down and stay much longer than we originally planned. It’s one of those places where you don’t feel rushed at all.

If you really enjoy coffee, they also offer coffee tasting, although these need to be booked in advance. It’s such a great experience for anyone wanting to learn more about their different roasts and flavours.

Grab a seat outside, enjoy the fresh air, and take in the beautiful surroundings while sipping on your coffee.

Blue Shed Coffee Roastery

Nestled in Mossel Bay, Blue Shed Coffee Roastery is a hidden gem for true coffee lovers.

This rustic coffee shop has made quite a name for itself, with spectacular ratings on TripAdvisor.  The cosy setting and the roastery’s attention to detail make it a favourite among locals.

Place your order at the counter, and then take a seat and wait for the waiters to bring you your order. Apart from their delicious coffee, there are also some delicious light lunches to choose from. We had the sandwich and pie, which was super delicious.

C&P Coffee Roastery

Located in the heart of Mossel Bay, C&P Coffee Roastery is another great cafe for coffee lovers exploring the Garden Route. This cosy little spot has a relaxed atmosphere and serves excellent coffee that keeps both locals and visitors coming back.

The smell of beans fills the cafe, and if you love strong, flavourful coffee, then you’ll definitely enjoy stopping here. Pair your coffee with one of their freshly baked pastries for the perfect mid-morning treat.

After your coffee, you can take a stroll through Mossel Bay or make your way down to the harbour area to enjoy the ocean views.

De Kleine Loerie

De Kleine Loerie quickly became one of my favourite stops along the Garden Route. This spot is an extension of the popular Loerie Bakery in Klein Brak, and there is honestly so much to enjoy here.

The coffee was great, but what made this stop extra special was grabbing a cake from the bakery and heading down to the beach to enjoy it there. Sometimes those simple little moments end up being the most memorable parts of a trip.

Another thing I loved about this spot is that there is so much to do, making it the perfect little stop while exploring the area. You’ll find the Salty River Beer House, Klipheuwel Farmstall and the Van Loveren Tasting Room all close by, so there is truly something for everyone.

Île de Païn

Located on Thesen Island in Knysna, Île de Païn is one of those places that people keep recommending. And after visiting, I completely understand why. While they are especially known for their freshly baked bread, their breakfast are just as incredible.

This cosy little cafe has such a charming atmosphere, and it’s the kind of place where you want to take your time and properly enjoy your meal. The smell of freshly baked bread fills the restaurant, and everything feels comforting.

Their coffee paired perfectly with breakfast, and it quickly became one of our favourite breakfast stops in Knysna. Afterwards, you can take a stroll around Thesen Island or make your way down to the Knysna Waterfront to continue exploring.

Slow Roasted Coffee

If you are passing through Sedgefield, don’t miss out on Slow Roasted Coffee. This spot truly lives up to its name, taking a slow and careful approach to every cup. It’s an excellent place to relax, whether you’re catching up on a good book or just taking in the chilled vibes of the town. Their coffee is smooth and satisfying, making it a perfect stop on your journey.

If you are there on a Saturday, then you can also make your way to the famous Wild Oats Farmers Market. Afterwards, head over to explore Gericke’s Point.

Hallo Coffee

If you want to enjoy your coffee with a nice view of the ocean from afar while being surrounded by lush greenery, then this is the perfect spot for you. Hallo Coffee is located close to the famous ‘Map of Africa viewpoint’ in Wilderness and is a great stopping point while exploring. Place your order in the container, and then you can make your way to the seating area that is scattered around. There are also some delicious snacks to enjoy with your cup of coffee.

This is a great spot to see the paragliders soar above the sea in the distance, as the take-off area is located close to this shop.

Plato

If you’ve spent any time in Pretoria, you’ve probably already heard of Plato. This coffee shop has made quite a name for itself in South Africa, originally starting out in Pretoria before expanding to other locations around the country. So naturally, I was very excited when I discovered there was one in George, too.

We stopped here straight after landing in George to kick off our Garden Route holiday, and honestly, it could not have been a more perfect first stop. It was rainy and cold outside, which made the good coffee even better. There’s just something about starting a road trip with coffee while listening to the rain outside.

The coffee was excellent, as expected, and it immediately made us excited for the rest of the trip ahead. If you are familiar with their Pretoria spots, then this George branch definitely won’t disappoint.

St Blaize Lighthouse Restaurant

Okay, so this is not a ‘coffee shop’ per se, but they do have some delicious coffee. And to be honest, I think the view from this restaurant is also the reason this spot made the list.

Perched on the cliffs with stunning ocean views, this cafe offers more than just a great brew. You can also enjoy a tour to the top of the lighthouse. So, take the very steep steps to the top, admire the view, and then end your adventures with a nice cup of coffee.

Just note that parking is limited here, so go early to avoid having to walk up the hill.

Seeplaas

If you’re looking for a coffee spot with a little extra charm, Seeplaas in Groot Brak River is a must-visit. Again, more of a restaurant than a coffee shop, but the service here was absolutely impeccable.

This art gallery and restaurant combo is an inspiring space, perfect for a leisurely coffee break.

It was quite cold the day we visited, and we barely ordered, and then our drinks arrived. You have a stunning view of the ocean in front of you, and there is something for everyone here. You can choose to sit indoors or outdoors, and if it is cold, then you’ll be treated to a blanket to keep you warm.
