Fun facts about Jacarandas

Did you know? The Jacaranda is not native to South Africa but was brought here from Brazil in the 1880s during the Gold Rush. You can see the oldest and biggest Jacaranda tree on the corner of Eastwood and Stanza Bopape.

Students from the University of Pretoria believe that the Jacaranda tree brings good luck – if a blossom falls on your head, then you’ll pass your exam.

However, since Jacaranda trees are not native to South Africa, you are not allowed to plant these trees anymore, hence why you’ll find these mainly in the older suburbs.

When to see the Jacarandas?

To make the most of your Jacaranda viewing experience in Gauteng, consider visiting during the peak blooming period. This typically occurs in October through to November.

It is difficult to say when is the perfect time to chase these purple blossoms, as it mostly depends on the weather. However, we usually find them most beautiful during the last two weeks of October.

You want to go right after the first rainfall in October, but also before the stormy summer weather starts.

Plan your visit during the daytime or during the golden hour to fully appreciate the vibrant colours of the blooms. And don’t forget to bring along your camera to capture the magic.

FUN FACT: Pretoria is slightly warmer than Johannesburg, so the Jacarandas bloom earlier in Pretoria than in Johannesburg.

Where to find the Jacarandas?

Pretoria

Fondly known as the “Jacaranda City“, Pretoria boasts an abundance of Jacaranda trees that adorn its streets, parks, and gardens. There are almost 70,000 Jacaranda trees in Pretoria alone.

One of the most iconic locations to witness the Jacarandas in full bloom is along the streets of the Arcadia and Brooklyn neighbourhoods. Here a canopy of purple flowers creates a stunning canopy ahead.

Take a leisurely stroll through the University of Pretoria’s Hatfield campus.

In my opinion, the trees are the prettiest in the Brooklyn area. We usually park at Brooklyn School and then walk around the area to scout the prettiest roads.

Another option is the Klapperkop Nature Reserve in Groenkloof. This is ideal if you want to see the purple cloud from above.

Other great areas for Jacaranda spotting are Eastwood, Riviera, and the union Building.

Johannesburg

While not as renowned for its Jacarandas as Pretoria, Johannesburg still offers plenty of opportunities to experience the beauty of these majestic trees. These are mostly found in the older suburbs on the northern side of Johannesburg.

Head to the suburb of Parktown, where the streets are lined with Jacarandas. It bursts into bloom during spring, casting a purple hue over the leafy avenues. Alternatively, explore the tranquil Botanical Gardens in Emmerentia, where you can wander among Jacarandas and other indigenous flora. This is perfect to escape from the hustle and bustle of the city.

Other areas include Dunkeld, Melrose and Rosebank.

Other Notable Locations

In addition to Pretoria and Johannesburg, there are several spots in Gauteng where you can admire the beauty of Jacarandas in bloom. Visit the quaint suburb of Irene, located just outside Pretoria. Alternatively, venture to the historic town of Krugersdorp, where Jacarandas add a touch of purple charm to the urban landscape, particularly Commissioner Street.
