Things to do in Johannesburg

Johannesburg, also known as Jozi or Joburg, is the biggest city in Gauteng and probably also one of the busiest cities in South Africa. There are many things to do in the area, whether escaping the big city life and hiding away in nature or getting your energy from city life vibes.

Things to do in Johannesburg

Even though there is a lot more to do, here are some things I think you should not miss when you visit this city.

Johannesburg Botanical Garden

Johannesburg Botanical Gardens is located in Emmarentia and is a FREE activity to do. Being surrounded by green sceneries and the skyline in view, it is probably most popular for access to the Emmarentia Dam. Enjoy a casual walk along the many footpaths scattered across the gardens, or grab a spot next to the dam.

Grab coffee and/or lunch at the Whippet

Now, this spot has been popping up a lot on my Instagram lately. I love a good coffee spot with pleasant aesthetics. And this is exactly what Whippet had. When we arrived, they were crazy busy, but we didn’t have to wait long to get a table. And once we placed our order, we understood why we didn’t have to wait so long, because the service was impeccable. Their food was delicious and their iced coffee was also perfect for the adventure that was planned for the rest of the day.

Hike at the Wild's Nature Reserve

I was pleasantly surprised with this spot! This nature reserve is run by the municipality, and the entrance is free. The gardens are well kept and nothing seemed out of place. There are hiking trails to try, or you can just chill on the lawn area.

You’ll also have a great view of the city skyline from some of the viewpoints.

Shop at 27 Boxes

This unique spot has many shops that you won’t find in your ordinary shopping mall. I suggest you visit them during the week, as not much is happening over the weekend. There are also cute restaurants located here, and also a nice garden area to sit at.

Try to see the Jacarandas

Gauteng is known for its purple streets during the Jacaranda season. This is usually during the months of October to November. Make sure you don’t miss out if you are in the city during these months.

Take a day trip

What is nice about Johannesburg, is that it is close to so many great possible day trips. Here are some places you can visit that is close by.

Sun City

Sun City is the perfect place to get away from the city and pretend that you are on the beach. This is because there is actually a man-built beach at this resort. The Valley of the Waves is only a 2-hour drive from Johannesburg/ Pretoria and they have some really nice accommodations available at the resort. So why not make a weekend of it?

With many activities like swimming, enjoying the lazy river, eating at the restaurant, or gambling at the casino, this is a spot that will keep you busy the whole day.

Pretoria

Pretoria has so many cool spots that you can visit, from great coffee culture to beautiful hiking trails and many shopping malls.

It is only about a 1-hour drive from Johannesburg, but many people do the trip for a day outing.

Hartebeespoort

Even though Hartebeespoort is located in the North West province, it is only a short 45-minute drive from Johannesburg. From the famous dam wall that makes you think you’re in Paris or even the mini-Eiffel Tower located at the French Toast Café, this will definitely make you feel like you’re in a completely different country.

Or take the cable car up the Magalies mountain range and see this little village from above.
