Hike to Gericke’s Point

I’ve wanted to visit Gericke’s Point for quite some time now, and when we visited this beach back in April, we, unfortunately, went during high tide. I thought that it would still be accessible during high tide, but Gericke’s Point becomes a whole island on its own.

I would rather classify this as a stroll along the beach, and not so much as a hike.

Basic information

Distance: 4km there and back.

Difficulty: Easy

Cost: Free

Starting Point: GPS Coordinates

Starting Point

Park your car at the parking lot at (📍) Swartvlei Beach and make your way to Gericke’s Point which is located on your right, you cannot miss the big sandstone sculpture in the far distance.

Before you make your way to this viewpoint, ascertain yourself with the tide times.

Gericke’s Point is an island on its own during high tide, and you definitely don’t want to be stuck there.

I suggest starting the walk as soon as the tide starts going out. You’ll see that it’ll be an easy walk all the way to the viewpoint.

The viewpoint

Once you get to the viewpoint, you can either enjoy the views from the bottom. There are also many rock pools that you can enjoy. Here you also get to see some crabs, shells, anemones, fish, and sea urchins.

If you feel a bit adventurous, you can climb to the top of the viewpoint. Here you’ll get a stunning view over the ocean and the mountains, with the long-outstretched beach to your left and right. It is quite rocky, so I suggest not doing this barefoot. There were not a lot of people who visited this viewpoint, so we had enough time to take some photos.

If you don’t feel like climbing to the top, no worries, you’ll get just as beautiful photos of this point with the massive rocks behind you. This is also a great spot to have a snack and enjoy the sunny South African weather.

What to bring with?

We all know that the South African sun is no joke, so I suggest taking a sun hat, enough water, and also some sunscreen. Make sure to take proper shoes with you if you plan on climbing to the top of the viewpoint.

As I’ve mentioned before, this is a great spot to enjoy a snack. We visited the famous Wild Oats Farmer’s market before we made our way to this viewpoint, which is a perfect spot to get some delicious treats.
