Visit Knysna Waterfront
(📍) Knysna’s Waterfront is a bustling hub of activity and a must-visit destination for anyone exploring the area. Situated on the edge of the Knysna Lagoon, this vibrant waterfront offers an array of shops, restaurants, and entertainment options. Stroll along the boardwalk and browse unique boutiques, craft stores, and galleries that showcase local artistry and craftsmanship. The waterfront is also home to numerous dining establishments where you can enjoy fresh seafood, including the famous Knysna oysters while overlooking the scenic marina. For those looking for adventure, various boat tours and water activities depart from the waterfront, offering the perfect way to explore the lagoon and its surroundings.
Knysna Elephant Park
(📍) Knysna Elephant Park provides a rare and ethical opportunity to interact with African elephants in a safe and natural environment. It is the first facility in South Africa to care for orphaned elephants.
Visitors can experience close encounters with these gentle giants, learning about their behaviours, history, and the conservation efforts aimed at protecting them. Activities at the park included guided tours where you can feed, walk with, and even touch the elephants under the supervision of knowledgeable guides. This unique experience is both educational and awe-inspiring, making it a highlight for visitors of all ages.
If you decide to go on an elephant walk, it is important to wear comfortable shoes and you need to be reasonably fit. There are only two walks a day, one in the morning and the other in the afternoon. Pre-booking is essential!
The morning walk departs at 07h30 and the afternoon at 15h30. The tour will take about 45 minutes. I would recommend taking the morning walk, as this includes breakfast at their restaurant.

Knysna Heads
One of the biggest attractions in Knysna is the (📍) Knysna Heads, and if you see the breathtaking views, you’ll understand why. Known for being the resting place for fishermen who endured the stormy weather, the rugged shoreline below the viewpoint and the crashing sound of the waves will make this stop worthwhile!
The Knysna Heads are a pair of sandstone cliffs that separate the sea from the Knysna Lagoon. You can access these spectacular views from the eastern head. You can also access rock pools and beaches from the eastern head. The western side of Knysna Heads is only accessible by ferry and this forms part of the Featherbed Nature Reserve, also a great option if you want to spend time in nature and do some hiking trips.
Visit Coney Glen Beach
Tucked away near the Eastern Head, (📍) Coney Glen Beach is a hidden gem that offers a tranquil escape from the more frequented tourist spots. This small, secluded beach is surrounded by rugged rocks and lush vegetation, creating a serene and picturesque setting. It’s an ideal spot for a relaxing day by the sea, where you can sunbathe. The beach’s natural beauty and peaceful atmosphere make it a favourite among locals and those seeking a quieter coastal experience.
Garden of Eden
Wander around the forest of Knysna. (📍) Garden of Eden is located just on the outskirts of Knysna, with a short and easy walkway that’ll take you through the lush and greenery forest. You’ll also see some tall standing trees and a beautiful stream running through the forest.
Definitely worth the stop! And here you’ll also get a permit for the Harkervill hiking trails.
Visit Thesen Island
(📍) Thesen Island is a chic and trendy area in Knysna, known for its stylish waterfront living and vibrant atmosphere. The island is connected to the mainland by a bridge and features a mix of residential properties, boutique shops, art galleries, and excellent dining options. Stroll along the picturesque streets lined with charming houses and lush gardens, or enjoy a meal at one of the many restaurants that offer stunning views of the lagoon. Thesen Island is also a hub for water-based activities, including kayaking, stand-up paddleboarding, and boat cruises. The island’s blend of natural beauty and modern amenities makes it a popular destination for both tourists and locals.

Here are some great day trips you can take from Knysna:
Wilderness
(📍) Wilderness is located 40 minutes from Knysna and is another favourite stop along the Garden Route. There are some beautiful hiking trails along the area, you can visit the famous Map of Africa, go canoeing, and so much more!

Sedgefield
(📍) Sedgefield is a short 20-minute drive from Knysna. I recommend visiting this area on a Saturday because this is when the famous Wild Oats Market is happening.

Wild Oats Farmers Market
Happening every Saturday morning from 07:30 am to 12 pm, this is a market you don’t want to miss! (📍) The Wild Oats Farmers Market is perfect for fresh produce, baked goods, flowers and a great lively atmosphere.
Gericke's Point
Take in the stunning views from (📍) Gericke’s Point. It is a short walk along the beach and can only be visited during low tide. There are plenty of rock pools to swim in and you can climb to the top to get a great view of Swartvlei Beach,
Swartvlei Beach
(📍) This beautiful outstretched beach is the perfect swimming spot with lifeguards keeping an eye out. The mountainous background creates the perfect photo opportunity and protects you from the sun in the afternoon,
Grab coffee at Slow Roasted Coffee
Indulge in a nice cup of coffee at one of the popular coffee spots in Sedgefield. (📍) Slow Roasted Coffee not only brews some delicious coffee but there are also some great baked goods you can try.
Buffels Bay
(📍) Buffels Bay is only a short 20-minute drive from Knysna and is a unique coastal village. Grab something to eat at Wildside Beach Restaurant, walk along the wide stretched beaches, visit Buffels Bay viewpoint and catch the sunset over the ocean,
Plettenberg Bay
(📍) Plettenberg Bay, also known as Plett, is a 30-minute drive from Knysna and you can easily spend the whole day here.

Robberg Nature Reserve
(📍) Robberg Nature Reserve definitely doesn’t need any introduction. There are three hiking trails to choose from to suit your fitness level. The long outstretched beach and white sand dunes are definitely my absolute favourite.

(📍) Arch Rock (also known as Cathedral Rock) is located at Keurboomstrand and is a short 2 km walk along the beach. There is also a great restaurant located right on the beach, called Ristorante Enrico. Make sure to pop by.

If you want to escape the busy beaches, then head over to (📍) Keurboomstrand to enjoy a golden beach with beautiful mountains in the far distance.
