Panorama Route Attractions
Let’s dive in and explore the magic of the Panorama Route!
Blyde River Canyon / Three Rondavels Viewpoint
The Blyde River Canyon (📍) is one of South Africa’s most spectacular natural wonders. Carved over millennia by the Blyde River, this immense canyon boasts towering cliffs and lush vegetation. It creates a dramatic landscape that captivates all who visit. Among its many highlights is the iconic Three Rondavels viewpoint, offering breathtaking panoramas of the canyon and its distinctively shaped rock formations resembling traditional African hits.
The Blyde River Canyon is 26 km long and is the third-largest canyon in the world – after the Grand Canyon and the Fish River Canyon. This Canyon is a ‘green canyon’ due to its subtropical vegetation. This is also the second most famous viewpoint in South Africa, after Table Mountain in Cape Town.
So make sure you are treated to awe-inspiring vistas that stretch as far as the eye can see, providing a glimpse into the sheer grandeur of nature’s artistry.
This viewpoint opens at 7 am and I highly suggest you go there early, so you’ll miss the crowds.
The road leading to the viewpoint has its occasional potholes, so be careful when driving. There is also a road sign (Three Rondavels) indicating the turn-off for the viewpoint.
Entrance fee: R35 pp (2022)
Lowveld Viewpoint
Perched along the famed Panorama Route and close to the Three Rondavels viewpoint, is the Lowveld Viewpoint (📍). Offering sweeping vistas over the Lowveld valley below. This scenic overlook provides unparalleled opportunities to admire the vast expanse of the rolling hills, forests and distant mountains that define the landscape. Enjoy the glistening Blydepoort Dam which is surrounded by forests sloped. As sunlight dances upon the undulating terrain, visitors are treated to a mesmerizing display of colours and textures. Making it a prime spot for photographers and nature enthusiasts alike. Whether bathed in the soft hues of dawn or the warm glow of sunset, the Lowveld Viewpoint offers a moment of tranquillity amidst the splendour of South Africa’s natural wonders.
This viewpoint also opens at 7 am and there was no one in sight when we visited. I think mainly because people are focused on seeing the Three Rondavels and sometimes miss this gem.
It is a short walk to the viewpoint, but the view is worth it!
Bourke's Luck Potholes
Of all the attractions, this one was the most expensive and it is also a very popular stop on the Panorama Route, so make sure to visit this spot early before all the tour buses arrive.
Bourke’s Luck Potholes (📍) is nestled within the Blyde River Canyon Nature Reserve and is a geological marvel that never fails to astound visitors. Carved over centuries by the tumultuous flow of the river, these cylindrical rock formations and swirling whirlpools create a mesmerizing mosaic of colours and textures. There are the surrounding cliffs and lush vegetation as a backdrop.
Named after the prospector who predicted riches but found only these natural wonders, Bourke’s Luck Potholes offers a glimpse into the raw power of nature and the intricate beauty it can sculpt over time. As visitors traverse the elevated walkways and bridges, they are transported into a world where water, rock, and time converge to create a truly unforgettable spectacle.
It is a short walk (about 1 km) to get to the potholes and there are multiple hiking trails available at the reserve. Just not that you do need a permit for these hikes.
Entrance: R65 pp (2022)
The Potholes is located 35 km north of Graskop on the R532 road.
Chase waterfalls
Embark on an enchanting journey where the melody of cascading waterfalls beckons adventurers to explore nature’s hidden treasures. From the thundering roar of Lisbon Falls to the delicate veil of Mac-Mac Falls, each waterfall along this picturesque route offers a unique and mesmerizing experience. As visitors traverse winding paths and lush forests, they are greeted by the sight of waters plunging into pools below. Chasing waterfalls on the Panorama Route promises to ignite the senses and leave an indelible mark on the soul.

Leopard Trail
If you are planning to do the Panorama Route in three days, I would highly recommend adding the Leopard trail to your list. This hike leads you into the Blyde River Canyon and there are multiple hiking trails to choose from with the leopard trail being the most favourite one. This also passes the famous Tufa Waterfall which is perfect for a quick swim. The shortest one is an hour and the longest trail is about 5-6 hours. The trail starts at the Blyde River Forest Resort and there you’ll get a map that’ll indicate the route. Here you will get a different viewpoint of the Blyder River Canyon and the Three Rondavels. You can also hike down to the river, or just follow the shorter hiking trails.
