The Panorama Route stands out as a must-visit destination for travellers seeking awe-inspiring vistas and unforgettable experiences.

Stretching along the eastern escarpment of the Drakensberg Mountains, the Panorama Route starts at the foot of the Long Tom Pass and makes its way to the famous Blyde River Canyon, which is the third largest canyon in the world and probably the most famous on the Panorama Route.

Enjoy this mesmerizing journey through some of the most picturesque scenery in the country. From cascading waterfalls and deep canyons to lush forests and panoramic viewpoints.

This is a popular stop point for people who want to make their way to the famous Kruger National Park. With only being a 4-hour drive from Pretoria, this is also the perfect weekend getaway for ‘Gautengers’.

What you need to know

Language: South Africa has 11 official languages, but you’ll mostly hear South Africans speak English, Afrikaans and Xhosa.

Currency: The currency in South Africa is called Rand ®.

Credit cards and ATMS: Not all of the attractions on the Panorama Route take cards (especially at the waterfalls), so make sure to take enough cash when visiting this area. Restaurants and shops will however have card facilities and you’ll find ATMs in all the major towns.

How much time do you need to explore the Panorama Route?

Even though there are so many attractions, two days will be more than enough to do this route (however it will be a jam-packed two days). If you want to take it easy and make sure you have enough time at each attraction and add extra hikes to your trip, three days would be advised.

Try to avoid this route during the peak season which is usually from May to August, as this is when it is not as hot in the Kruger National Park and therefore people flock here before heading to the Park. This will also help you to avoid crowds and make it easier to visit all the attractions.

When to visit the Panorama Route?

The Panorama Route is popular all year round. But in my opinion, the best time to visit is from March to May, this is right after the rainy season, so the waterfalls are in full flow. It is also the perfect time to visit the Kruger National Park as it is not too cold in this part of South Africa during the winter season, and also not that hot as during the summer season.

Getting around

Your best option would be to explore the Panorama Route by car (a 4×4 would be your best option as the roads in this area are not the best; however, you can still explore this area without a 4×4). There isn’t much public transport in this area of South Africa, and you’ll have a lot more freedom when you have your own transport.

International travellers are encouraged to rent a car at the airport and then make their way to Mpumalanga. After exploring the Panorama Route, you can make your way to the Kruger National Park for some great safari adventures.

Where to stay

There are many different areas to stay at, which includes Sabie, Graskop or Hazyview.

We opted for Graskop, as I found this to be more central for all the activities we wanted to do.
