Sandboarding in Mossel Bay

Nestled along the breathtaking coastline of Mossel Bay, lies an adrenaline-seeker’s paradise: Dragon Dune. And yes, we slayed the Dragon!

If there is one activity you must do when you are in the Garden Route area,  then it is to go sandboarding. Dragon Dune Sandboarding is located in Vleesbaai, which is a short 25-minute drive from Mossel Bay. This Dune is also known as the biggest and longest sandboard ride in South Africa. So this will ensure an unforgettable journey through the golden sands and rolling dunes of the Garden Route.

What to bring

The following is required when visiting Dragon Dune:

  • Closed shoes
  • Sunscreen
  • Camera
  • Drinks
  • Short pants on warm days

The three dunes

There are three dunes to sandboard on.  You will start at the very first dune where they will show you everything you need to know about sandboarding. This is also where Leon (the sandboard master) plays the cameraman and ensures everyone gets a photo of their experience. From here you’ll move on to the other two dunes.

1. Baby Dune

Baby Dune is where everyone is taught all the basics of sandboarding. They will see whether you should be sandboarding with your dominant side or not. The distance of the baby dune is only 100 meters.

2. Big-Boy Dune

The Big-Boy Dune is 180 meters long and is great if you are not ready to face the big dragon yet. Here you can also sandboard with someone else, which is so much fun!

3. Dragon Dune

This is the one you’ll be most excited to try. This dragon is 170 meters high and 350 meters long. The maximum speed that has been reached on the belly board was 90 km/h.

My overall experience

This has been one of my highlights of the trip. Booking was so easy and communication was great from the get-go.

Once we got there, we made our payment and then made our way to the ‘bakkie’. They then transport you with the ‘bakkie’ to the Baby Dune.

Here they make sure that everyone feels comfortable before moving on to the bigger dunes. Since we were there during whale season, we even saw some whales breaching in the far distance.

I honestly cannot recommend this activity enough! Especially if you are looking for an activity that can be done by the whole family.

PS: Just know that the walk back up the dune will result in your calves being on fire!!!
