When is the best time to visit South Africa? This is a question I get asked quite often, and my response is always, “It depends on the region you want to visit and the activities you are planning on doing.”

South Africa has breathtaking landscapes, rich culture, and diverse wildlife. It is a destination for travellers. So whether you are eager to embark on a safari, explore the beaches, or enjoy the vibrant cities, understanding South Africa’s seasons is key to planning your perfect trip.
South Africa's Climate
We all know that South Africa boasts a diverse geography and there are various climates. The country experiences opposite seasons to the northern hemisphere.
- Summer is from November to February and is hot in most regions. KwaZulu-Natal is known for its humid summers, with the Western Cape being more of a dry summer. Coastal areas are mostly popular during this time.
- Autumn runs from March to May and is a milder, cooler period with fewer tourists.
- Winter is from June to August. It tends to be cool to cold, particularly in the Highveld and Drakensberg Mountains. The coastal regions stay relatively warm, especially KwaZulu-Natal. This is also the perfect time to see wildlife in the Kruger National Park. You can also see some snow in certain regions, such as the Drakensberg, Clarens and inland from Cape Town.
- Spring is from September to October and this is the perfect time to see blooming flowers and clear skies all over South Africa.
Peak Season vs Off-Peak Season
South Africa’s peak tourist season runs from December to February, coinciding with the summer holidays. This is the busiest time to visit, particularly in coastal regions. Prices for accommodation and tours can be higher, and attractions may be crowded.
If you prefer a quieter experience, the shoulder seasons (March to May, and September to November) offer excellent weather, fewer tourists, and lower prices. This is a great time to enjoy South Africa’s beauty without the crowds.
Travel Regions
Understanding the regional climate can help you choose the best time to visit based on your travel goals.
Cape Town
Let’s face it, the most popular area in South Africa is Cape Town! And there is a good reason for it. It is famous for its iconic Table Mountain, pristine beaches and world-renowned winelands. Making it a must-visit location.
It is important to note that the Western Cape’s weather is a little different to the rest of South Africa. Its rainfall season is during the winter time (June to August), which means it is a cold and wet winter.
Most believe that visiting Cape Town during the summer months (November to February) is best as the weather is warm and sunny. This is the perfect time to relax on the beaches of Camps Bay or Clifton or explore the Cape Winelands.
Autumn is also a fantastic time to visit Cape Town as the weather is still pleasant. Fewer tourists are making it easier to enjoy popular attractions.
However, my absolute favourite time to visit is during the spring (September to November) season. The main reason for this is that the Western Cape province is known for its wildflower season during this time; more so during September. This is also right after Cape Town’s rainy season, so everything is green and lush.

Garden Route
The Garden Route is a scenic drive along the southwestern coast area that stretches from Mossel Bay in the Western Cape to Storm River in the Eastern Cape. This area has rainfall throughout the year, but mostly during April.
I believe this region can be visited any time during the year, as it is always green and beautiful.
This area is best visited during spring (September to November) or autumn (March to May). During these seasons, the weather is mild, and the region’s landscapes are lush and green. The spring months also bring the famous wildflower season, making it an ideal time for nature lovers.
This area is also popular for whale watching, particularly on the coast of Hermanus. The best time to see southern whales is from September to November, with peak viewing in September and October. These months offer an incredible opportunity to witness these majestic creatures from the shore or by boat.
People usually also love starting their trip in Cape Town and then making their way to the Garden Route whilst exploring all the small villages on their way.

Wild Coast
Wild Coast is situated in the Eastern Cape between East London and Port Edward. It is one of South Africa’s most untouched and rugged regions.
If you are looking to explore secluded beaches, rolling hills, and dramatic cliffs, the best time to visit is during Autumn (March to May) or Spring (September to November).
These seasons offer milder weather and fewer rains, perfect for hiking the coastal trails and exploring Xhosa villages.
Summer can be humid, while winters may bring cooler temperatures but remain pleasant for outdoor activities.
KwaZulu-Natal
KwaZulu-Natal has a sub-tropical climate and is nice and warm straight through the year. It is known for its golden beaches, Zulu culture, and Big Five fame reserves.
The best time to visit the coastal city of Durban is during winter (June to August) when temperatures are warm and humidity is low, making it ideal for beach vacations.
Summer (November to February) can be hot and humid, with afternoon thunderstorms, but it’s also a great time for lush, green landscapes.

Drakensberg
The Drakensberg region is South Africa’s highest mountain range and is a haven for outdoor enthusiasts.
The most famous hike is the Amphitheater hike (aka chain ladder hike) to the top of Tugela Falls – the tallest waterfall in the world!
The best time to visit the Drakensberg is during the autumn (March to May) season as the thunderstorm season has passed, which can get quite hectic at the top of the mountain. It is also after the rainy season, so the falls will be in full flow and the area quite lush and green. The temperatures are also moderate and the weather is stable. Making it perfect for hiking, camping, and enjoying breathtaking views.
Winter (June to August) offers a unique experience for those wanting to see snow-capped peaks but be prepared for chilly conditions.
Panorama Route
The Panorama Route is situated in Mpumalanga and is perfect for chasing waterfalls. This region is mostly famous for its spectacular views of the Blyde River Canyon, God’s Window, and Bourke’s Luck Potholes.
So, if you want to see them in full flow, then make sure to visit them right after the rainy season.
The rainy season is during summer (December to February), so make your way to the Panorama Route from May to September. During this time the skies are clear, the landscapes are crips, and there is little rain to disrupt your sightseeing. The route is an ideal stopover on the way to Kruger National Park, offering a scenic detour filled with waterfalls, dramatic cliffs, and dense forests.

Kruger National Park
You cannot visit South Africa and not include a safari, and the Kruger National Park is South Africa’s premier wildlife destination.
Since the Kruger National Park is situated in the northern part of South Africa, it tends to get very hot during the summer months. Autumn and Winter time (May to September) are the best times to visit this region. This is right after the rainy season, and animals congregate around waterholes, making wildlife viewing easier. The temperatures are cooler, making safaris more enjoyable.
For birdwatchers, the wet season (November to February) brings migration species and vibrant landscapes, though spotting big game can be more challenging due to the thicker vegetation.
Planning on doing a South African trip that includes more than one region?
Want to do a whole trip around South Africa, here are my suggestions:
Start your journey by flying to KwaZulu-Natal and end it in Port Elizabeth (aka Gqeberha).
Here is the perfect 40-day itinerary:
- Umhlanga (3 days)
- Ballito (3 days)
- Drakensberg (2 days)
- Clarens and Golden Gate National Park (3 days)
- Johannesburg (2 days)

- Panorama Route (3 days)
- Dullstroom (2 days)
- Pretoria (2 days)
- Cape Town (5 days)
- Garden Route (7 days)
- Jeffreys Bay (2 days)

By including all these incredible regions in your travel itinerary and visiting at the right time, you’ll experience the very best of South Africa has to offer. Whether it’s the untouched beauty of the Wild Coast, the majestic mountains of the Drakensberg, the rolling hills of KwaZulu-Natal, or the sweeping vistas of the Panorama Route – there’s no shortage of adventure and wonder in this stunning country.
