Things to do in Ballito

Ballito is a charming town nestled on the breathtaking Dolphin Coast of South Africa. It is great for relaxed vibes with stunning golden beaches. KwaZulu-Natal is known for its warm weather, even during the winter season, June to August, you can still enjoy a sunny day at the beach.

Things to do in Ballito

Let’s explore the best things to do in Ballito:

Hit the beach

A trip to Ballito will not be the same without spending a day on its pristine beaches. KwaZulu-Natal is lapped by the Indian Ocean, meaning the water is much warmer compared to Cape Town. So, this is perfect for swimming.

Some of my favourite beaches include:

All these beaches have lifeguards on duty, making it ideal for enjoying the waves.

Wander along the Ballito Boardwalk

Take a scenic walk along the Ballito Boardwalk, which runs parallel to the coastline. The wooden boardwalk is raised, protecting the dunes and giving you a great view of the large pod dolphins visiting the beach every morning. This picturesque path offers stunning views of the Indian Ocean and is perfect for a morning jog, an evening walk, or a relaxing bike ride. The sound of the waves and the fresh sea breeze make this an enjoyable experience any time of the day.

Visit the Hole on the Wall

The iconic (📍) Hole in the Wall is located at Thompson’s Bay. This natural rock formation creates a picturesque and unique swimming area, perfect for both relaxation and exploration. This Hole in the Wall connects to a secluded beach area, which can only be accessed during low tide as the water can get quite high when crossing the small bridge. You can also swim in the massive tidal pool that is located at the Hole in the Wall.

Discover the magic of tidal pools

Ballito’s tidal pools are a must-visit, providing safe spots for swimming and snorkelling. Some well-known spots are the Chaka’s Rock and Salt Rock tidal pools, featuring crystal-clear waters. It’s an excellent spot for families.

Waterberry Coffee Shop

The (📍) Waterberry Coffee Shop is nestled in a piece of indigenous coastal forest. They have the most delicious waffles (definitely try their nougat waffle) cakes and coffee. You can either sit inside or on the patio outside where you can enjoy the abundance of bird life. There are some delicious treats you can buy afterwards, such as jams and syrups.

Once you’ve filled your tummy, get back to nature by gently strolling along the forest walk.

Catch a sunrise

Since Ballito is on the east coast of South Africa, that means the sunrises here are magical! Make sure to wake up early at least once. However, once you’ve seen the magic behind a KwaZulu-Natal sunrise, you’ll want to get up early every morning. See how the sky turns from fire to cotton candy. So pour yourself a cup of coffee and see how the sky lights up over the vast ocean.

Watch out for the dolphins

There is a reason why this is called the Dolphin Coast, they enjoy dancing in the waves early in the morning. You can either enjoy them from the boardwalk and beach or you can go out on the water with a boat tour. There are several local operators that offer tours that will bring you up close to these majestic animals.

(📍) The Litchi Orchard is a favourite haven among the Ballito community. There are some great shops where you can support local artisans and buy some fresh, locally-grown produce.

They also have some very cute restaurants you can visit. Have a look at the flowery Sophie’s Café.

Get creative at The Pottery

For a creative and relaxing activity, visit (📍) The Pottery, where you can paint your own ceramics. This charming alfresco café offers a variety of pottery pieces ready for your artistic touch. You’ll find many colours and patterns to personalize your ceramic masterpiece.

It is advised that you book a table to ensure that you have a spot, and then you can collect your art piece after it is glazed and fired. Or they can ship it for you. This is a unique, handmade souvenir to remember your time in Ballito.

Support the street shops

All along the boardwalk, you will find many places where you can buy items, such as beach towels, caps, beach games and kids’ beach toys.

Buy some sand buckets and shovels and hit the beach to build some sand castles and play some beach games.

Admire the sand art

You’ll find amazing beach art scattered all along the beaches in Ballito. Locals create beautiful sculptures from sand, mostly ocean animals or the Big 5. Make sure to support them by giving a donation before taking photos.

Things to do on your way to the Dolphin Coast

There is no doubt that South Africa has some of the most beautiful stops and is perfect for a road trip. Here are some things you can do when making your way to the Dolphin Coast.

Stop at Engen Bergview Stop

Engen Bergstop is usually the perfect stop for a quick coffee break. It is located in Harrismith and the name Bergview says it all. ‘Berg’ means mountain in Afrikaans, and this pitstop is surrounded by the beautiful mountains of Harrismith. There are various restaurants available if you also want to grab something to eat. My favourite coffee shop has to be Seattle Coffee!

Hike in the Drakensberg

Do you feel like having an adventure? Then make your way to the Drakensberg and hike to the tallest waterfall in the world. The Amphitheater hike can easily be done in one day, and you can spend the night either at the top of the mountain or at the Witsieshoek Mountain Lodge – this is where the trail starts.

Enjoy something to eat at The Windmills Kitchen

The Windmills Kitchen is located right of the N1 in Nottingham. There are plenty of places for the kids to play, you can explore the beautiful gardens, and enjoy something to eat at the many shops. What I like about the concept of Windmills Kitchen, is that you can order at various food stalls and then pay once you get to the paying station. This means everyone can get what they want.

Stop at Howick Falls

Howick Falls is a mesmerizing natural wonder and is cascading from a height of approximately 95 meters. The waterfall is nestled within a lush gorge, surrounded by indigenous vegetation. Howick Falls is not only a scenic attraction but also holds cultural significance for the Zulu people.
