Wonderboom Nature Reserve is located in the northern part of Pretoria and is mostly famous for the massive ‘wild fig tree’ also known as the Wonderboom that stands tall close to the entrance. The reserve comprises 200 hectares, and there are mainly three trails to choose from. We did a combination of all three trails, as they do link together.

Things to do at the Wonderboom Nature Reserve

Go hiking

There are various trails available at this reserve, but the most popular one has to be the trail to the fort.

The other trails will take you to a cave and a waterfall, which are situated close to each other.
Unfortunately, the waterfall wasn’t working when we got there, so I would not suggest making the trip to these two attractions. You will, however, see a great view of the freeway and the Apies River.

The starting point of the fort trail is clearly marked with a sign, but from here on it is pretty much guessing where you’re headed. You’ll get the occasional footprint sign.

The trail starts with a steep incline, and once you get to a spot where the trail splits up in two, continue straight and up the hill; this will then lead to the fort. When you take the road to the right, you’ll make your way toward the cave and waterfall.

We started with the Fort Trail, and on our way back we continued with the trail to the cave/waterfall and then down to the picnic area. This gave us a distance of 4.4 km with an elevation gain of 222 m.

You’ll also get some amazing views of the city once you’ve reached the fort.

The trail is considered moderate due to the steep incline and rocky pathway but is definitely doable for kids. Luckily there is enough shading along the trail, which helps during those hot summer days.

Visit the Wonderboom - 'Fig Tree'

Right at the start of all the trails, you’ll find this massive tree standing tall, and that is surrounded by other trees. Walk onto the wooden pathway and take a stroll around the base of the tree.

This fig tree (aka Wonderboom) is older than 1,000 years, and it is believed that this tree is so gigantic because the chief of an indigenous tribe lies buried beneath it.

This tree was once so big that it gave enough shade for 1,000 people. There was a devastating fire back in 1870, which caused the tree to be much smaller now.

The tree is now surrounded by other trees, known as ‘the circle of daughters‘ because the tree’s branches have grown longer, touching the ground, and then rooted and produced these three trees.

Explore the Fort Wonderboompoort

This has to be one of the main attractions at this nature reserve and is the stopping point of one of the hiking trails. It is a steep climb to get to this point, but what an amazing experience to see part of history.

This run-down fort is located on the crest of the Magaliesberg, and it was built during the Second Boer War.

There are some gorgeous views from above, and then you can make your way down to explore the fort up close.

Enjoy a picnic

There is a really nice picnic area that is located at the parking area of the reserve. There are plenty of braai spots available as well. Please just remember to leave no trace behind.

Look out for the wildlife

Look out for the friendly zebras that roam around the reserve. You’ll mostly find them at the picnic area or the car park area.
