Hike to Lisbon Falls, Panorama Route

Nestled within the picturesque landscapes of the Panorama Route in Mpumalanga, lies a hidden gem of natural beauty – the Lisbon Falls. Tucked away amidst lush greenery and cascading waters, this breathtaking waterfall offers a mesmerizing experience for adventurers and nature enthusiasts alike.

Lisbon Falls is located just north of Graskop in South Africa and it is probably the most impressive waterfall on the whole Panorama Route. It is the largest waterfall in Mpumalanga, standing 94m tall.

As this is such a popular waterfall, it tends to get quite busy. So going before 10 in the morning is a good idea!

Visiting Lisbon Falls

The great thing about the Panorama Route is that most of the attractions are close to one another. The road to the falls is easily accessible and there is no need for a 4×4 vehicle. Just watch out for the potholes (as there are many!).

Most people just walk to the viewpoint which overlooks the water plummeting towards the rocky surface at the bottom and into the valley below.

Lisbon Falls is, like many of the other waterfalls in the area, named after foreign miners who settled in the region during the gold rush.

Hike down to Lisbon Falls

Although most people just view the waterfall from the viewpoint at the top, I would highly suggest you take the short hike into Lisbon Creek.

As I embarked on my journey to Lisbon Falls, I couldn’t help but anticipate the awe-inspiring sights that awaited me. The sound of rushing water fills the air with the gentle rustle of leaves and the chirping birds. 

The hike starts on the left side of the viewpoint. The path to the bottom is slightly overgrown and can be quite slippery when wet, so I would suggest that this hike is done with hiking shoes (especially during the rainy season).

It starts with a very short flat surface and as the path makes its way to the right, the steep climb down to the creek will lead you to the waterfall. You will also be required to climb over some boulders. Once at the bottom, you can hear the water crushing in the distance. Make your way towards the waterfall (right of the path).

The hike is about 2.4 km and takes about 30 to 45 minutes, depending on your fitness level and how many photos you take along the way.

Once at the bottom

Upon arriving at the falls, you’ll be immediately captivated by the sheer grandeur of the surroundings. As you venture closer to the falls, you’ll be greeted by the refreshing mist that envelopes the area.

After the hike down, you would be all too willing to jump into the water and enjoy a dip in the pools. Take in the majestic views of the waterfall from the bottom and the lush greenery surrounding it.

It is also the perfect spot for a picnic, before heading back up.
