Embarking on a road trip from Gauteng to KwaZulu-Natal is an adventure filled with stunning landscapes, unforgettable stops, charming towns, and historic landmarks.
Table of Contents
ToggleKwaZulu-Natal is a popular holiday destination for those living in Gauteng, mainly because it is much closer than the other coastal areas.
So whether you are travelling from Johannesburg or Pretoria, here are some great spots you can stop at when you make your way to the coast.
Some of these stops require an overnight stop, so feel free to skip these if you want to drive straight to the beach.

Stop 1: Clarens
Johannesburg – Clarens (300 km – 3hrs)
As you begin your adventure in the bustling province of Gauteng and leave the city behind, the landscape gradually transforms from urban sprawl to rolling countryside.
Your first major stop is the picturesque town of (📍) Clarens, nestled on the foothills of the Maluti Mountains. Known for its vibrant art scene and charming atmosphere, this is the perfect place to stretch your legs.
I suggest spending at least two nights here to truly experience the magic of Clarens.
Activities here include visiting art galleries, driving around the beautiful Golden Gate National Park, and enjoying a meal at any of the restaurants scattered around this quaint town.

Stop 2: Amphitheater Hike in the Drakensberg
Clarens – Witsieshoek Mountain Lodge (85 km – 1hr 30 min)
If you are a nature lover and enjoy the outdoors, then you have to do the Amphitheater hike—one of my favourite hikes in South Africa.
Hit the road early and make your way to (📍) Witsieshoek Mountain Lodge. This will ensure you have enough time to complete the hike.
It is located in the Royal Natal National Park and leads to the tallest waterfall in the world—the Tugela Falls!
You have two options: either hike to the top and sleep atop the mountain or hike up and back down and enjoy some spectacular views from your room at the Witsieshoek Mountain Lodge. BOOK your stay HERE!

Stop 3: Engen Bergview 1 Stop
Witsieshoek Mountain Lodge – Engen Bergview 1 Stop (80 km – 1hr 15min)
Hit the road early and make a pit stop at (📍) Engen Bergview 1 Stop for a well-deserved coffee break.
This is one of the best rest stops I’ve ever been to in South Africa as they have a variety of restaurants to eat at (or grab a takeaway).
This rest stop is located in Harrismith and you’ll have stunning views of the surrounding mountains.
Fun Fact: ‘Berg’ is the Afrikaans name for Mountain – hence the name.
Make sure you have something warm to wear, as it gets quite cold here. You can refuel both your car and yourself before heading to your next stop.
My favourite coffee spot here is Seattle Coffee Co.

Stop 4: Llandaff Oratory (The Little Church)
Engen Bergview – Little Church (35km – 30 min)
(📍) Llandaff Oratory, Little Church is the smallest church in South Africa with so much charm. It is halfway between Johannesburg and Durban and is situated in Van Reenen. They serve breakfast daily with coffee and some tea with scones and jam. You can also enjoy daily homemade lunch specials.
Learn about the history of this unique church, built by a father in memory of his son.

Stop 5: The Windmills Kitchen in Nottingham Road
The Little Church – Windmills Kitchen (140km – 1hr 30min)
Treat yourself to a delicious meal at the (📍) Windmills Kitchen in Nottingham Road. This charming eatery is located off the N1 and offers a variety of mouth-watering dishes in a cozy setting.
There are plenty of places for the kids to play; you can explore the beautiful gardens and enjoy something to eat at the many shops.
What I like about the concept at Windmills Kitchen is that you can order at various food stalls and then pay once you get to the payment station. This means everyone can get what they want.

Stop 6: Nelson Mandela Capture Site
The Windmills Kitchen – Nelson Mandela Capture Site (30 km – 30 min)
Continue your journey to the (📍) Nelson Mandela Capture Site near Howick. This historical landmark commemorates the arrest of Nelson Mandela in 1962 and his 27-year imprisonment.
Here, you can find a striking sculpture of the iconic South African leader Nelson Mandela’s face.
This structure is made from steel columns, which, when viewed from a specific angle, form a complete portrait. Visitors can also explore the museum and learn more about Mandela’s life.

Stop 7: Howick Falls
Nelson Mandela Capture Site – Howick Falls (10 km – 15min)
A short drive from the Capture Site, you’ll find (📍) Howick Falls. A majestic waterfall plunges 95 meters into the gorge below. Marvel at the powerful cascade and the lush surroundings.
Howick Falls is not only a scenic attraction but also holds cultural significance for the Zulu people.

Stop 8: The Giants Cup Wilderness
Howick Falls – The Giants Cup Wilderness (131 km – 2hrs)
Head to Underberg to experience the (📍) Giants Cup Wilderness. This area is perfect for those who love the great outdoors. This is perfect to escape city life, as you are surrounded by mountains and gorgeous lake views. There are multiple activities you can do here to keep you busy. From hiking trails, canoeing on the lake, and enjoying the serenity.
I suggest you stay here for a night or two. BOOK your stay HERE!
Just note that a 4×4 vehicle is advised for this section of the trip.
