Here are my top ice cream spots in Pretoria:
Aroma
Aroma is a very popular gelato shop and has two locations. It is a charming spot that combines the best of Italian Gelato with the warm comfort of Belgian waffles. One of the shops is located in the heart of Pretoria and is known for its authentic, artisanal gelato made with fresh ingredients.
The most famous one is located in Hazelwood Village, which is a popular food village with a selection of restaurants to choose from. You can either grab an ice cream cone (or cup if you wish) and explore the streets of the Hazelwood Village, or grab a seat while enjoying the bustling scenery around you.
The other Aroma is situated in Silverlakes and is perfect for an ice-cream date night.
They also have ice-cream sandwiches, where you can choose your gelato and cookie flavour and they build you a sandwich. This is obviously my husband’s favourite!
Location: Hazelwood
Operating Hours:
- Monday: 7 am to 6 pm
- Tuesday to Friday: 7 am to 10 pm
- Saturday: 8 am to 10 pm
- Sunday: 8 am to 9 pm

Royal Danish
If you think of ice cream in Pretoria, then I bet that the Royal Danish has popped up. Located in the Colbyn Village, their best-seller is the Copenhagen Ice Cream. Royal Danish offers a taste of Denmark with its exquisite homemade ice cream. This family-owned shop takes pride in using recipes that result in creamy, flavourful ice cream that keeps customers coming back for more.
It started as a boutique ice cream parlour in the 1980s in Hillbrow, Johannesburg and the recipes for the ice cream and sugar cones came from the parent company in Australia. The shop was later moved to its present location in Colbyn and the name was changed to Royal Danish Ice Cream.
Location: Colbyn
Operating Hours:
- Monday to Thursday: 10 am to 8 pm
- Friday to Sunday: 9 am to 9 pm

Whisk Away
Whisk Away is a local favorite, known for its innovative and delightful ice cream creations. They offer a variety of flavours that cater to both traditional and adventurous palates.
Unfortunately, they closed their physical store which was located in Waterkloof, but you can still find their ice creams, sorbets and ice cream cakes online.

Melt
Melt is a trendy spot that has quickly become a favourite among Pretoria’s ice cream lovers. It has popped up on my social media lately, and the massive cones and fancy milkshakes have caught my attention. So after our hike at Groenkloof Nature Reserve, we decided to pop by for an after-hike reward.
They have a variety of ‘draai roomys‘ to choose from.
Location: Brooklyn
Operating Hours:
- Tuesday to Thursday: 9 am to 7 pm
- Friday and Saturday: 9 am to 9 pm
- Sunday: 9 am to 6 pm

Krema
Krema Gelato is located at the Atterbury Value Mart and they have some delicious gelato to choose from. My favourite is the Ferrero Rocher. They have a dedication to creating unique flavour combinations. The texture is perfectly creamy, and the taste is pure and delicious.
You can grab some to go, or have a seat and enjoy some gelato with a waffle. They also have a savoury menu, if you want to grab a bite to eat.
Location: Faerie Glen
Operating Hours:
- Monday to Saturday: 8 am to 6 pm
- Sunday: 8 am to 5 pm

Kitamu
Kitamu has recently opened up at the new Forest Walk Shopping Centre. You cannot miss this bright yellow ice cream shop that specializes in bubble waffles with different toppings to add.
If you don’t like having a waffle, then you can also just go for their different flavours of gelato. They also have some delicious milkshakes to choose from.
Location: Hazelwood
Operating Hours:
- Monday to Thursday: 11 am to 7 pm
- Friday and Saturday: 11 am to 8 pm
- Sunday: 11 am to 5 pm
