Platteklip Gorge is probably one of the most iconic hiking trails up Table Mountain. Now if you ask any international tourist to name one thing about Cape Town, then chances are they will mention Table Mountain. And why not? It is one of the 7 Wonders of the World after all!

ToggleAlthough many opt for the cable car to get to the top, various hiking trails will lead you to the top. Each trail is of various lengths and provides you with different, yet spectacular, views. So instead of waiting in line for 2 hours at the cable station, why not get some exercise in and hike it up?

The first time we hiked up Table Mountain we used the Kasteelspoort trail, but this time we opted for the shortest route up Table Mountain – the Platteklip Gorge Trail.
Some information about the Platteklip Gorge Hike
Although the distance of the hike is short, it is a steep climb to the top. And I mean STEEP! It is a massive stone stairway that climbs to the top with no flat services or any downhill sections. Many describe this as an outdoor exercise on the Stairmaster. So, make sure to stop every once in a while, to take in the beautiful scenery that is playing out in front of you. Whether that is the ocean with the rolling waves, Robben Island in the distance or the fynbos dancing in the wind.
TIP: Start the hike before sunrise to avoid the scorching sun.
The start of the hike
Ascending Table Mountain via Platteklip Gorge is an experience like no other. The trail begins near the lower cable car station, easily accessible from the city centre. You’ll see a clear sign indicating the start of the hike. The trail starts with an immediate and brutal ascent. As you set out on the trail, you’ll be greeted by towering cliffs, indigenous flora, and panoramic vistas.
The trail
Platteklip Gorge follows a well-defined path, making it suitable for hikers of all skill levels. While challenging, the ascent is rewarding with numerous lookout points offering opportunities to catch your breath and marvel at the awe-inspiring scenery below.
There aren’t many trees to provide shade along the trail, so make sure you have enough sunscreen, water and a hat.
The zig-zag trail up is a rocky and uneven pathway; however, we never had to scramble over rocks. About a quarter into the trail, you will pass a small stream that flows over the pathway. Then you just continue with the trail that will lead you to the gorge. You can clearly see the gorge from the start of the trail. So, it is pretty easy to see how far you still need to go. Once you’ve passed through the gorge, it is a very short and flat walk to the Cable Car station at the top.
You will definitely get the feeling of accomplishment once you’ve reached the summit. Here you’ll have spectacular views of the famous Lions Head, Robben Island and the ocean that’s stretched out in front of you.
You can also enjoy something to eat and drink at the restaurant at the top. Do try their slushies – they are the best after a sweaty climb!
Getting back down
Now once you are at the top, you can decide to either take the cable car down or hike back down via Platteklip. You can also hike down with one of the other trails (Kasteelspoort, Skeleton Gorge or India Venster).
If you decide to take the cable car down, you can buy a one-way ticket at the station at the top. Just follow the signs stating hikers’ tickets. We paid R210 for a one-way ticket. Also, take note that the cable car is only operational if the weather permits it, and this can change within minutes. So, check the weather before you start your ascent, and you can also check their website to see if the cable car is running or not.
It is always good to check the weather conditions before your hike and make sure you are well prepared.
If you decide to do another trail down, you can always arrange an Uber once you’ve reached the end. They can then drop you at your car, back at the start of the Platteklip Gorge hike.
If you are only in Cape Town for a short amount of time, and you want to hike Table Mountain, I would highly recommend Platteklip Gorge. It won’t take you the whole day to hike and then you can still explore the rest of Cape Town the afternoon.
Tips for Hikers
- Start early to avoid crowds and the heat of the midday sun.
- Carry enough water and snacks to stay hydrated and energized.
- Wear sturdy hiking shoes with good grip for the rocky terrain.
- Check weather conditions beforehand and be prepared for sudden changes.
- Respect the environment and leave no trace of your visit. Ensure the preservation of this natural treasure for future generations.
