Mont Rochelle is only an hour’s drive from Cape Town and spans over 1,000 hectares comprising pristine wilderness, rugged mountains and tranquil valleys. It is named after the imposing peak that dominates the skyline and is the perfect escape from the hustle and bustle of city life.
The reserve is part of UNESCO and has some great views of the Franschhoek Valley. There are multiple hiking trails to choose from for different fitness levels.
It would be a great option to start the morning bright and early with one of the hiking trails and then explore the rest of the Cape Winelands.

Location:📍 Franschhoek
Starting Point
We made our way to the reserve quite early to try and catch the sunrise. Although the gates only open at 9 am, you can start your hike before this and just pay your entrance fee once you get back from your hike.
We decided to do the Uitkyk trail, as this was a moderate hike and not too long. My brother joined us on the hike and this was his first time hiking up a mountain.
You’ll have to drive the Franschhoek Pass to get to the reserve. Luckily, there are clear signs indicating the entrance to the reserve. You’ll find the parking area right at the entrance gate, which is where you’ll find a map indicating all the different hiking trails. I suggest taking a picture of the map to make your journey easier.
All the trails are well-maintained and well-marked and boast diverse plant life and spectacular views.
Different Hiking Trails
All the routes start with a 450m gravel road, hereafter it continues with a rocky pathway up the mountain. Below is a list of some of the hiking trails available at the reserve (from shortest to longest):
Breakfast Rock Trail
This trail is easy and is also the start of the Vista, Du Toitskop, Uitkyk and Perdekop trails. This trail is only 1 km long and takes about 1 hour to complete (30 minutes for experienced hikers). This is the perfect trail for a first-time hiker.
Vista Trail
The Vista trail is a moderate trail that is 2.5 km long and will take 2 hours to complete. It is a circular trail that includes the Breakfast Rock Trail and also a short section of the DuToitskop Trail.
Uitkyk Trail
We decided on the Uitkyk trail as I’ve seen the stunning panoramic view of the Wemmershoekdam. It took us 4 hours to complete the hike (with multiple stops to take photos). This is a moderate trail of about 6 km for a round trip.
The first part of this linear trail includes the Breakfast Rock Trail.
DuToitskop Trail
The DuToitskop Trail is one of the longer hiking trails in the reserve but is seen as a moderate trail. It has a distance of 13 km that will take 5 hours to complete. Once you’ve reached the Breakfast Rock, you can continue to the left to follow this trail. You’ll have some spectacular views of the Franschhoek valley.
Perdekop Trail
The Perdekop Trail is difficult and also one of the longest hiking trails on the reserve. It is a circular hike with a distance of 13km that’ll take about 7 hours to complete. You’ll reach the highest point in the reserve with this trail. You’ll see that about 2.7 km from the entry gate there’ll be a sign indicating that the Perdekop Trail leads to the right where you’ll climb steadily up the mountain until you reach the Du Toit’s River Gorge. Here you’ll find a steep descent into the gorge and then a steep climb back up after which you’ll then make your way back to the entrance gate.
