Two routes for Lion's Head
There are two routes to choose from. The chain ladder route being for the more adventurist hikers (although I can promise that it is not as bad). If you are not that comfortable with the chain ladders, you can continue straight with the second route, which will take you around the mountain.
Start of the Hike
Park your car close to the start of the trail via the Lion’s Head / Signal Hill turn-off from Kloof Nek Road (📍).
The trail up Lion’s Head is a testament to the diverse beauty of South Africa’s natural terrain. The journey begins with a gentle ascent, meandering through indigenous fynbos vegetation. As the path winds upwards, hikers encounter rocky outcrops and occasional steep sections that add an element of thrill to the hike.
The chain ladders
One of the highlights of this trail is the famed spiral-shaped chains and ladders that assist climbers during the more challenging segments. These metal supports not only provide a sense of security but also add an exciting element to the adventure. They offer hands-on experience, allowing hikers to feel connected to the landscape as they ascend.
The summit
Ascending Lion’s Head is a testament to patience and perseverance, and the reward at the summit is nothing short of extraordinary. As the summit is reached, a 360-degree panorama unfolds, showcasing Cape Town in all its glory. To the west, the cast Atlantic Ocean stretches as far as the eye can see. To the east, the silhouette of Table Mountain stands proudly, and the cityscape of Cape Town sprawls beneath.
The best time to hike
The best time to conquer Lion’s Head varies. While sunrise hikes offer a mystical experience as the dawn breaks over the horizon, sunset treks provide a canvas of colours that paint the sky in hues of gold and crimson.
Another very popular hike up Lion’s Head is during Full Moon. Hikers make their way up the mountain to experience the moon shining big and bright over the mother city. Just take note that since it is very popular during this time, it is also very busy
Tips for hiking up Lion's Head
For those planning to embark on this adventure, a few tips can make the journey more enjoyable. Comfortable hiking shoes, plenty of water, sunscreen, and a hat are essential companions.
Additionally, starting early the hike to catch sunrise or sunset can enhance the overall experience. But taking a headlight is important to ensure safety during the dark.
It’s also wise to check weather conditions and trail status before setting out, as Cape Town’s weather can be unpredictable.
