The start of the trail
The trail is known for its diverse landscapes, ranging from lush fynbos to rocky outcrops. The trailhead is conveniently located at the base of the mountain in the tranquil suburb of Camps Bay. Start on the Twelve Apostles side of Table Mountain at Bakoven (📍) and make your way up by following the Jeep trail. This is also the start of the Pipe Track.
I suggest starting early in the morning. This will ensure that there will still be enough shade for you to ascend the mountain.
The initial stretch of the trail meanders through indigenous vegetation. As you ascend, the views of the Atlantic Ocean gradually unfold – a great backdrop for your hike!
The steep ascent is well-managed with rocky steps, allowing hikers to maintain a steady pace. Twenty minutes into the trail, you’ll see a clearly marked sign that indicates the direction for the Kasteelspoort Trail.
One of the highlights of the Kasteelspoort Trail is the stunning Kasteelspoort Ravine. This dramatic gorge presents a unique contrast to the surrounding greenery.
The final stretch
When you are also at the end, there will be a lookout point overlooking Lion’s Head. The final ascend to the summit involves a combination of well-maintained pathways and, in some sections, a bit of scrambling.
Once closer to the end, you’ll see the gradient eases a bit. Continue past a wooden bridge until you find a rocky sign.
Follow the route ‘Twelve Apostles Spine Route’ to make your way to the driving board. Once you’ve reached the second sign, you follow the flat trail called ‘Old Cableway Viewpoint’. This trail will lead you to the Old Cableway which was used in the olden days to ship materials for the construction of dams on top of Table Mountain.
The Old Cableway and the Diving Board are located close to each other.
Reaching the summit of Table Mountain via the Kasteelspoort Trail is a triumphant moment for any hiker. The 360-degree views from the top provide sweeping views of Cape Town, Robben Island, and the vast Atlantic Ocean.
Hiking up Table Mountain via the Kasteelspoort Trail is a remarkable adventure that combines physical exertion with the rewards of stunning natural beauty. Whether you’re an avid hiker or a casual nature enthusiast, this trail offers an unforgettable experience that captures the essence of Cape Town’s natural splendour.
