Chapman’s Peak is nestled on the southwestern tip of Africa. It boasts stunning landscapes that captivate the hearts of adventure enthusiasts and nature lovers alike. The hike to Chapman’s Peak offers not only breathtaking views of the Atlantic Ocean but also a chance to connect with nature. It is the perfect escape from the hustle and bustle of city life.
Some information about the Chapman's Peak hike
- Level: Moderate
- Total distance: About 5km for a round trip.
- Duration: 2-3 Hours round trip (depending on your fitness level).
- Cost: You’ll have to pay a toll tariff when passing the Tollgate (see the fees here).
Where to park
As you pass the tollgate when coming from Hout Bay, you will find the start of the trail at the very first parking area on your left-hand side. Park your car at this parking area and make your way up the mountain. There is a sign indicating the start of the trail (📍).
Be sure to ask for a Day Pass at the tollgate (if you come from Hout Bay’s side). This Day Pass will ensure that you can park your car at the parking area without having to worry, but also that you don’t have to pay again at the Tollgate when you leave.

About the Trail
The Chapman’s Peak hike is a moderate trail that takes you along the rugged coastline of the Cape Peninsula.
The start of the journey
Starting at the trailhead, hikers are immediately greeted by the crisp sea breeze and the sound of crashing waves. The well-maintained path, mostly consisting of a rocky surface, winds its way up the mountain, offering glimpses of the vibrant fynbos vegetation that blankets the slopes.
You start with a steep climb at the beginning of the trail for about an hour and a half. When the trail splits into two trails, keep to the right. Here the panoramic views of Hout Bay and the surrounding cliffs unfold, providing an excellent excuse to catch your breath and soak in the natural beauty. The contrast between the deep blue waters of the Atlantic and the lush greenery of the mountains creates a stunning visual spectacle that serves as a constant companion throughout the hike.
The summit
The final scramble to the top will take about 30 minutes and is also a bit steep. Right at the end you’ll have to do some rock scrambling – but this is not that bad!
When arriving at the top, there is enough space to sit down and enjoy the beautiful scenery. You’ll also have a stunning 360 view of Hout Bay and Noordhoek. Table Mountain looms majestically in the distance, and the Atlantic Ocean stretches infinitely to the west.
Tips for hiking Chapman's Peak
- Be prepared: Wear comfortable hiking shoes, bring sufficient water, and dress in layers as the weather can change rapidly.
- Check Weather Conditions: Cape Town’s weather can be unpredictable, so it’s essential to check the forecast before embarking on the hike.
- Start Early: To avoid the midday heat and enjoy the tranquility of the trail, consider starting your hike early in the morning.
- Respect Nature: Stay on marked paths, respect local wildlife, and adhere to any regulations to preserve the natural beauty of Chapman’s Peak. And always leave the place the way you found it (or better!).
