We first hiked here during the winter season so it was not as ‘groen’ (green) as the name says. Except for this certain part on the trail with many yellow leaves, which was absolutely beautiful.

But I would highly recommend hiking here during the summer months to see it coloured in green and lush.

Groenkloof Nature Reserve's History

Groenkloof Nature Reserve holds the distinction of being South Africa’s first nature reserve, proclaimed in 1895 by President Paul Kruger. The reserve’s rich history is intertwined with its natural beauty, offering visitors a glimpse into the past while they explore its pristine landscapes. The reserve spans over 600 hectares, providing ample space for a variety of outdoor activities.

We opted for the 10.5 km trail, as we wanted to head for the mountain to gain some elevation.

What I liked most about this reserve was that there were multiple trash cans on the trail, which helped to keep the area clean.

The trail was also very well marked, and you just follow the footprint (which is printed in the colour of the trail you are doing). They also indicate your progress along the trail.

Trail options

There are three trails to choose from:

Red Trail

The red trail starts on the left side of the reserve and is an easy 3.5 km hike.

The red trail connects with the last km of the yellow trail and is an ideal trail for beginners or those looking for a shorter, more relaxed hike.

White Trail

The red and the white trails both start at the same location. At the split, the white trail will lead to the left and the red trail to the right.

This is an easy 4 km trail that also has a cave to look out for. It is a great option for a relaxing hike with children or beginners.

Yellow Trail

We opted for this moderate 10.5km trail. This trail provides a good workout with its steep inclines and rugged terrain. This trail took us about 3 hours to complete and you’ll have some breathtaking panoramic views and the opportunity to spot diverse wildlife along the way.

Wildlife you can see along the way include zebras, jackals, duikers, kudus, impalas, blue wildebeests, red hartebeests, ostriches, giraffes and sables.

The trail starts right behind the horse stable. It starts with an immediate climb and about 500m in, you continue to the right with the trail.

The trail is very easy to follow and it provides you with a great view of the Voortrekker Monument in the distance and also the city skyline.

At about 8km you can take an alternative road that will add an extra 1.3 km to your hike. It will cross back to the yellow trail.

At 9km, you can also join the Red Trail, which will then add another few km to the trail.

These alternative roads are indicated.
