See the Christmas Lights in Pretoria and Johannesburg

It’s the festive season. My favourite time of the year and what better way to get the festive spirits than by wandering through the streets decorated with Christmas lights?

It has become a tradition for us to watch the lights in December before heading to our holiday destination. This year, we decided to do Pretoria and Johannesburg. And let me tell you – every year it gets bigger and better.

Just take note that these spots do get busy, so make sure you go with lots of patience.

Christmas lights in Pretoria

I think by now, everyone knows that Lawley Street is the place to be when you want to see some Christmas lights in Pretoria. The neighbourhood has recently become a gated community. But, they have left the main gate (GPS coordinates) open for people to still be able to see the lights. And as I’ve mentioned before, every year it gets better and better.

You can either drive down the street. Everyone here wants to enjoy the lights, so nobody gets angry if you drive a bit slow. OR you can park your car at the starting point on one of the side roads and then walk down the street. This is the option I’ll recommend because as of this year there were some coffee vendors next to the road. You’ll also see some bands playing Christmas songs. This way you can grab a cup of coffee and take photos with all the Christmas lights.

I think the best time to visit this street is from the second week in December. Take note that it does tend to get busy at around 19h00.

Christmas lights in Johannesburg

Melrose Arch started its Christmas lights show a few years ago and it has since become a popular spot. They closed off one street and then there is this long walkway decorated with Christmas lights. Apart from all the great restaurants and coffee shops, there are also some food stalls selling chips, cotton candy, and so on. This is especially great for the kids! Just know that you might stand in a line to take photos with certain lights, like the massive teddy bear and Santa.

The Melrose Arch lights show usually starts the last week of November and continues through December.

When you visit Melrose Arch, you can just make your way to the Melrose Arch parking lot, and from here on you will not miss the lights. Make it a complete date night with your loved ones and grab something to eat before heading to the lights at around 19h00.

Make it a complete weekend out of it and stay over at the Protea Fire and Ice (Book Here) or at Marriott Hotel (Book Here) located at Melrose Arch.
