When driving from Johannesburg, I would suggest driving to Harrismith and then continue to Golden Gate Highlands National Park, as this road is

Golden Gate Highlands National Park is a year-round destination, but the best time to visit depends on your interest:
- Spring (September to November) – The park is in full bloom with wildflowers, making it a great time for nature walks and photography.
- Summer (December to February) – Warm weather and lush greenery are perfect for hiking and outdoor activities. Be prepared for the occasional thunderstorms.
- Autumn (March to May) – Mild temperatures and fewer crowds make this an ideal time for exploring the park.

Top things to do at the Golden Gate Highlands National Park
Before starting your adventure at the Golden Gate Highlands National Park, I suggest you buy a permit at the (📍) information centre that is located at the Total Garage / Glen Reenen Camp and Chalets. With the permit, you’ll receive a map showing all the points of interest.
Here are some of the adventures you can embark on:
Drive the famous Lichen Pass
The Litchen Pass is also known as the Golden Gate Pass and stretched 2041 m. This pass winds through the park providing you with spectacular views of the mountain and surrounding valleys.
Stop at the various viewpoints
There are various lookout points that you can enjoy from the comfort of your car.
One overlooking the Litchen Pass, some overlooking the Drakensberg Mountain Range and others the Red Mountains. These are the perfect spots to have a snack while enjoying each other’s company.
Drive the Loops in the National Park
There are two loops you can drive within the National Park. These popular routes offer stunning views and excellent opportunities to spot wildlife. You’ll need to purchase a permit for both loops at the (📍) information centre. Luckily the permit will give you access to all the activities in the National Park.
Blesbok Loop
The Blesbok Loop can only be done one-way and stretches 6.7km with various viewpoints along the way.
The loop starts closest to the Glen Reenen Rest Camp and Chalets and make sure to look out for all the wildlife along the drive.
Oribi Loop
The Oribi Loop is also a one-way road that is 4.2 km in distance. The entrance is also closets to the Glen Reenen Rest Camp. You’ll see a lot of wild animals roaming around and you’ll have access to the Vulture Feeding Project. Make sure you stop and enjoy the Drakensberg Viewpoint.
Visit the Natural Swimming Pool
The natural swimming pool is located right behind the Glen Reenen Chalets. Continue with the trail among the tall grass until you see the natural swimming pool come into view. This is the perfect spot to take a dip or just have a picnic.
Stop at the yellow frame
All over South Africa, you’ll find yellow frames to take pictures with iconic backgrounds.
Located just next to the Golden Gate Hotel, you’ll find the Golden Gate Highlands yellow frame. There is a parking space next to the road and from there you just follow the footpath to the frame.
Go grab a cup of coffee at the Bus Stop
Although not located in the National Park itself, it is just after it. Make your way to the Red Bus and grab a coffee before you set off to explore some more.
Day trips from Golden Gate Highlands National Park
Here are two really good day trips you can take from this National Park:
Clarens
Clarens is just 20 minutes from Golden Gate and has the best quirky shops. There are also such a massive variety of restaurants to choose from. So park your car and explore this small town on foot. Want to explore more of the beautiful nature of this area, then enjoy some of the hikes at the Clarens Nature Reserve.

Hike to the tallest waterfall in the world in the Drakensberg
Who does not want to adventure to the tallest waterfall in the world? The trail starts at the Witsieshoek Mountain Lodge, which is an hour’s drive from Golden Gate. Get up early, make your way to the Drakensberg and tackle the 12km hike. This moderate trail will challenge you mentally with the chain ladders of terror (that’s if you are afraid of heights). But the view at the end will make this so worth it!
Where to stay?
The best way to explore this gem of South Africa is by booking a place to stay at the National Park.
Do book in advance, as there are only a few accommodations available.
- Glen Reenen Camp and Chalets – You can either bring your tent and camp at the slope of the mountains or book a chalet to stay in. Both provide you with spectacular views. ($)
- Highland Mountain Retreat – If you are looking for a place with the best view, this is the place for you! However, don’t expect luxury rooms. These eight wooden log cabins overlook the vast grassland and mountains. ($)
- Golden Gate Hotel – If you are looking for a bit more luxury, then Golden Gate Hotel is the place for you. There are various rooms available, as well as chalets. ($)
- Kiara Lodge – Kiara Lodge caters for everyone and has so many great options to choose from. They also offer additional activities, such as quad biking, swimming facilities and kids play areas. ($$)
