Explore the South Coast, KwaZulu-Natal

The South Coast of KwaZulu-Natal starts at Amanzimtoti and runs all the way to Port Edward on the Transkei, which is located on the border of the Eastern Cape.

You’ll find some golden beaches mixed with warm ocean waters of the Indian Ocean. The lush nature reserves provide that tropical feel of KwaZulu-Natal and its tropical weather makes this the perfect holiday destination – all year around.

Things to do on the South Coast

Because of the tropical weather and beautiful beaches, most people like to spend their day at the beach. However, this is not all this beautiful coastline has to offer.

Here is a list of my favourite things to do:

Hike at the Mpenjati Nature Reserve

Two wonderful hiking trails will take you along the south bank of the river or through the dune forest.

Do yourself a favour and wander off the trail and walk along the beautiful outstretched beach.

Enjoy a waffle wat the famous Waffle House

In Margate, you will find the famous Waffle House. The Waffle House (📍) serves the most delicious waffles – sweet and savoury. They tend to get quite busy so be prepared to sometimes wait for a table. However, it is totally worth it!

Explore the Red Desert

On the South coast, you will find the world’s smallest desert. This red desert (📍) is described as a miniature version of the Arizona desert.

It is located about 10 kilometres from Port Edward and is 200m in diameter.

Park your car at the Red Desert National Park area and take a short walk to this mini-desert.

Visit the Riverbend Crocodile Farm

You can visit the Riverbend Crocodile Farm (📍) in Ramsgate to have the opportunity to have a look at the crocodiles and even watch the staff feed the crocodiles.

Here you will also find an Art Gallery to browse through and you can unwind afterwards at the Crocodile Café.

Operating Times: Daily from 10h00 to 16h30

Spend the day at the beach

The South coast has many beaches to have a relaxing day – from Ramsgate, Margate to Uvongo. With KwaZulu-Natal having the warmest water for swimming in South Africa, do go and enjoy a dip in the ocean.

Swim in a tidal pool

With the main beach just next to the tidal pool in Ramsgate, this is the perfect spot to go swimming – either in the big tidal pool or in the ocean.

Enjoy a Paddle Boat Ride

At Margate’s main beach, you can rent a paddle boat and enjoy paddling onto the Bilanhlolo River (📍). This is also located next to the Waffle House, so you can enjoy your paddling and end it off with a nice waffle.

So whether you are seeking some adventure, or just want to relax – the South Coast has it all!
