It is divided into the Dolphin Coast, including popular spots such as Ballito and Umhlanga, and the South Coast, with areas such as Margate and Ramsgate.

Language: South Africa has 11 official languages, but you’ll mostly hear South Africans speak English, Afrikaans and Xhosa.
Currency: The currency in South Africa is called Rand (R)
Credit Cards and ATMS: Being one of the major cities in South Africa, most restaurants and shops have card facilities. ATMs are also available at most gas stations and shopping malls.
Water: Due to water scarcity, KwaZulu-Natal has implemented water-saving measures. Visitors are encouraged to conserve water during their stay. Also, avoid drinking tap water, rather opt for store-bought water.
When to visit Durban?
Durban enjoys a subtropical climate, making it a year-round destination. However, the best time to visit is from April to September when the weather is warm and dry.
December months are also the busiest time when everyone flocks to the beach to escape the humidity.
Getting to Durban
By Air:
Durban’s King Shaka International Airport is the main gateway for international and domestic flights. The airport is approximately 35 kilometres north of the city centre, and there are plenty of transportation options, including car rentals, uber or airport shuttle services.
By Car:
If you are driving from other parts of South Africa, the N3 highway connects Johannesburg to Durban, making for a scenic road trip. From Cape Town, it’s a longer drive, but the N2 highway offers beautiful coastal views.

- Visiting one of the many beaches along this gorgeous coast.
- Enjoy a walk along the Golden Mile – a stretch of beachfront and a lively promenade.
- Dine at the famous Oysters Box.
- Take in the views at the Whalebone Pier.
- See the tall standing Umhlanga Lighthouse.
- Take your photo at the Hole in the Wall at Thompson Bay.
- Bask in the sun and take a swim at the many tidal pools.
Getting Around
While public transport is available, renting a car offers more flexibility for exploring the region.
If you are not comfortable driving around yourself, then Uber is another great option; however, it can get a bit pricey.

Chaka’s Cove – These self-catering apartments have some great views overlooking the ocean and the Chaka’s Cove Tidal Pool. There is a very short walk to the beach and the best restaurant in the area (Salt Cafè) is within walking distance.

Pebble Beach – This self-catering apartments are located next to Chaka’s Cove and is located on a cliff overlooking the ocean. It is a short 2 minute walk to the beach and has a great swimming pool overlooking the ocean.

La Montagne – A short 2 minute walk to Compensation Beach and it has a great swimming pool and all rooms with ocean views. There is a Palm Terrace restaurant that offers breakfast, lunch and dinner. There is also a bar alongside the pool.

Salt Rock Hotel and Beach Resort – Salt Rock Hotel is a 1 minute walk from the beach and is located along the Dolphin coast. There is a large swimming pool and the restaurant has a view of the Indian Ocean.

The Oyster Box – This hotel does not need an introduction. It overlooks the Umhlanga Lighthouse and Indian Ocean and there are two outdoor pools to lounge at. The famous hotel is a 5-star hotel and the restaurant here also overlooks the Ocean.

The Seaglass – With just a 12 minute walk to the beach, this luxury Bed and Breakfast has the best panoramic views. There is also a 25m outdoor pool.
