Tidal Pools in Ballito
Here is a list of tidal pools that are worth a visit:
Thompson's Bay
(📍) Thompson’s Bay is home to one of the most famous tidal pools in KwaZulu-Natal. The pool is carved into the rocky coastline, creating a beautiful and unique spot. This is also a massive pool, making it perfect for swimming laps.
You will also find the “Hole in the Wall” here. A natural archway in the rock, which adds a sense of adventure to your visit. The surrounding beach is also excellent for sunbathing.
Chaka's Rock
(📍) The Chaka’s Rock Tidal pool is the perfect spot for children to swim as it is not as deep. The water is also nice and warm and this is the perfect spot for some snorkeling.
It is not as busy early in the mornings, but it tends to attract people in the afternoons. This is also the perfect spot to watch the sunrise over the ocean in the mornings. So pack yourself a cup of coffee, or buy one at the (📍) Salt Cafè that is just around the corner, and make your way to the pool. PS: They also have the most delicious paninis and croissants!
Salt Rock
Just north of Ballito, you’ll find another favourite tidal pool – (📍) the Salt Rock Tidal Pool. This large pool offers a safe swimming environment with crystal-clear water, making it ideal for families with young children.
It is located across from the Salt Rock Caravan Park and Salt Rock Hotel. Since it is close to these accommodations, it tends to get quite busy.
One of the unique features of this tidal pool is that it looks like a heart shape from above.
Willard Tidal Pool
(📍) The Willard Tidal Pool is located beside the main beach; however, it is hidden behind the rocks. The shallow waters make it an excellent place for swimming. With its convenient location near beach amenities, restaurants, and shops, it provides a perfect blend of natural beauty and modern convenience.
